Attaining a Life Long Goal: How Pilates Boosted Strength for a Life-Changing Hiking Adventure

Sarah first heard heard of Vero Pilates in Long Beach because of its solid reputation and because she happened to live near our old location. She also practiced yoga at Yogalution, so when Vero Pilates moved to Redondo Ave, it was a convenient opportunity to have both studios in one place.

Pilates came highly recommended to Sarah by several friends as a form of strength training. At first, she didn't fully understand what made Pilates different from yoga - a common question!

In the spring of 2024, Sarah began training seriously for her first multi-day hike, a 96+ mile trek over eight days along the West Highland Way in Scotland. This trip was something she had dreamed about for most of her life, and adding the challenge of the hike would make it the ultimate adventure. As she started preparing, she realized she had significant muscle imbalances and a short attention span when it came to lifting weights, which led to slow progress in building strength. Her goal wasn’t just to finish the hike but to enjoy it as well. It became clear that she needed to step up her training to address these imbalances, which is when she decided to give Pilates a try.

Sarah mentions noticing some remarkable changes in her body. Her feet and ankles have become much stronger—she experienced zero pain in her feet, ankles, calves, or shins throughout the entire hike. In her own words, Sarah says, "My feet and ankles have become bullet proof!"  Additionally, her knees didn’t hurt as much when hiking or running, something she had struggled with in the past. Her core strength has improved significantly, which enhanced her balance and stability, as well as reduced back pain. She also discovered that she was able to use her breath more efficiently to manage her energy during physical activities.

Outside of Pilates, Sarah enjoys a variety of activities. She practices yoga, paddleboards, roller skates, and, of course, loves hiking and spending time in nature. She is also passionate about creating art in various forms and values the time spent with her partner and their dog, Bodie.
