So you're considering getting certified as a Pilates instructor, but feel like you have no idea where to start. That's ok! There is a lot of information out there on the internet and it can feel confusing even to the more experienced of us.
This series of blogs that I will be posting over the next few weeks is designed to help you work through the research process of figuring out what program is right for you.
We will start by looking at the the difference between MODULAR Pilates programs and COMPREHENSIVE Pilates certification programs.
MODULAR PILATES CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS
Programs that are built in modules means that you can choose to sign up for courses focused on individual pieces of equipment like the mat, reformer, chair, or cadillac.
Modules are usually shorter in duration as they require fewer lecture hours in total. In addition, you will be required to do less hours of observation, self-practice, and practice teaching compared to a comprehensive program.
With a certificate from completing a module, you will be able to teach on that specific piece of equipment that you are certified on.
These certifications may be a good option for you if you are already a movement coach and are looking to expand your knowledge base to be able to offer additional training modalities to your clients. It is also helpful if you are looking to teach a specific type of class like mat or "reformer pilates" at a gym or other fitness facility.
As the length of the program is considerably shorter and requires less resources to run, modules can be a financially more advantageous option in the circumstances described above.
Keep in mind though, that if after completing a modular certification on one piece of equipment, you decide you want to round out your knowledge of the Pilates Method, it may require you to sign up for multiple modules over time which may increase the cost of your training even beyond what a comprehensive program would cost you - just something to consider!
COMPREHENSIVE PILATES CERTIFICATON PROGRAMS
Comprehensive training programs cover the entire spectrum of Pilates apparatus including: mat, reformer, cadillac, chair, ladder barrel, and props.
These programs are designed to help you see and understand Pilates as a complete methodology that can be used to work with clients of all ages and fitness levels and in any setting.
Comprehensive Pilates certification programs generally require approximately 500 hrs of dedicated time that include lecture hours, self-practice, observation, and practice teaching.
Lecture hours for comprehensive programs are generally organized either by levels, or by apparatus depending on the individual approach of the school or teacher trainer. Examinations usually include a written, practical, and teaching portion.
Though comprehensive programs take longer to complete and require more dedication, they provide a solid foundation and understanding of the Pilates Method in its entirety for those with a desire to teach in a specialized Pilates studio, or other professional spaces like a physical therapy or chiropractic office. Comprehensive programs allow you to learn all the tools available in the Pilates toolbox, so that you can successfully work with any client in real life.
The cost of comprehensive programs is understandably higher as the time and resources it takes to help a student successfully complete this type of program is a lot more involved.
HOW TO DECIDE
The main question you need to ask yourself is, "Where do I want to teach and with what type of clientele?"
For example, in a specialized boutique studio like Vero Pilates, instructors are required to be comprehensively certified. However, at larger fitness facilities, it may be sufficient to have a certification just for the mat or reformer in order to teach larger group classes.
So that's my first piece of advice when starting your research into the world of Pilates certification! First figure out if you are looking to take a modular or comprehensive certification program.
I'll see you next week with more tips!
