With the advent of online learning platforms you can now find a wide variety of Pilates certification programs that are fully online. Here are some things to consider when weighing online vs. in-person programs.
ONLINE PILATES CERTIFICATION PROGRAM COST COMPARED TO IN-PERSON
Undoubtedly, this is significant for numerous individuals seeking certification. Online programs benefit from the ability to enroll unlimited students since they aren't constrained by physical space or equipment limitations. Furthermore, these programs can be recorded and provided as "self-study" options, allowing you to watch lectures and learn at your own pace.
In-person Pilates certification programs must decide how many students each cohort can accommodate based on available space and resources. This typically results in fewer enrollments, increasing the program's costs.
HANDS-ON VS. OBSERVATIONAL LEARNING
In online courses, instructors can only illustrate exercises and concepts using models they select. Consequently, as a student, you are restricted to observing what you can see through the screen as effectively as possible.
The truth is that the human body is highly complex, with numerous nuances that might be overlooked when you cannot observe the subtle movements and changes directly. Attending courses in person also provides the chance to use participants as models for demonstrating exercises, resulting in a more authentic learning experience for students.

BETTER OR WORSE?
In my view, online learning isn't necessarily "worse." However, I believe that when beginning your studies as a Pilates instructor, in-person accountability and coaching are essential. After becoming certified and acquiring some practical experience as an instructor, pursuing continuing education online becomes suitable, as there are excellent programs led by outstanding instructors at that stage.
In summary, although enrolling in an in-person Pilates certification program requires additional expenses and time, the advantages significantly surpass the investment. Attending in person allows you to gain real-time observation and coaching, enhancing your ability to identify key aspects in your clients during instruction. It also provides personalized coaching from your instructor to help you advance in your own practice. Moreover, being present in person increases your accountability for attending lectures and completing your training hours promptly.
